The organization of birdwatching tours in Campania represents a project idea developed within the framework of the F.U.N.T. grant — Finanziamento Unione Nazionale Turismo (National Tourism Union Funding) — aimed at enhancing the natural heritage and promoting sustainable forms of tourism across the territory
The province of Salerno offers one of the most diverse ecological gradients in Southern Italy, where coastal wetlands, river valleys, limestone massifs, and upland forests are compressed into a single, exceptionally rich birdwatching landscape. From the Tyrrhenian coast to the inland Apennines, habitats shift rapidly, creating ideal conditions for both resident and migratory species across all seasons.
Birdwatching experiences in Salerno may include inland wetlands and river estuaries, agricultural mosaics, Mediterranean scrub, and extensive forested uplands, as well as rugged mountain ridges that act as natural corridors for raptor migration. Migration is particularly spectacular, with soaring species moving along the coastal and inland flyways. Wetlands and river systems host a rich diversity of waterbirds, while mature forests support species such as Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Black Woodpecker.
The journey often begins in the Persano Oasis, a key freshwater ecosystem where riverine habitats support rich biodiversity and one of the few stable populations of Eurasian Otter in Italy. These wetlands provide excellent birding opportunities throughout the year, with riparian woodlands, reedbeds, and shallow water environments.
Further south, the Foce Bussento wetlands and surrounding coastal areas form an important stopover site for migratory species, including gulls, terns, and herons during seasonal movements. Nearby Mediterranean scrub and agricultural fields host a rich community of breeding passerines during the spring and summer months. Inland archaeological landscapes such as Velia combine cultural heritage with natural habitats, where typical Mediterranean species are regularly observed in open countryside and scrub environments.
A defining feature of Salerno is the Cilento mountainous system, including Monte Bulgheria and the Monti Alburni, where limestone massifs and dramatic escarpments create a powerful migration corridor. Skies are crossed by Black Storks, Honey Buzzards, Montagu’s Harriers, and other raptors, offering some of the most impressive migration spectacles in Southern Italy. Karst plateaus and high-altitude environments along the Cilento–Lucanian Apennine border further enrich the avifauna, supporting open-country species and high-elevation specialists in a unique geological setting.
The inland Tanagro Valley and surrounding uplands provide a contrasting landscape of meadows, woodland edges, and river corridors, where Hoopoe and shrikes are regularly observed, alongside storks moving through agricultural mosaics. The Picentini Mountains complete this ecological continuum, with forests and clear mountain streams hosting White-throated Dipper and a variety of woodland specialists.
This combination of coastal wetlands, river systems, agricultural landscapes, and mountainous terrain makes Salerno one of the most complete and dynamic birdwatching provinces in Southern Italy.

WWF Serre-Persano Oasis: Located along the Sele River, the WWF Serre-Persano Oasis represents one of the most important river systems in Campania. The alternation of wetlands, riparian woodlands, and rural landscapes creates highly suitable conditions for rich biodiversity. The area is also one of the few sites in Italy where the European otter can be regularly observed.

Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park: The Park is the largest protected area in Italy and is characterised by a remarkable variety of habitats, ranging from high-altitude forests to Mediterranean scrub along the coast. The mountain environments of the Casone d’Aresta area preserve some of the most intact forest landscapes in southern Campania, where mature beech forests and upland clearings define a highly natural and sparsely anthropised setting of great importance for forest-dwelling species. Further south, the area between Monte Bulgheria and the main river mouths along the Tyrrhenian coast, including the Bussento River mouth, presents a mosaic of coastal habitats of high natural value. The combination of riparian vegetation, river systems, and residual dune ecosystems creates particularly favourable conditions for migratory birds during seasonal passage periods.

Campanian–Lucanian Apennines: Between the Vallo di Diano and the Lucanian border lies a territory characterised by exceptional habitat diversity, where beech forests, upland pastures, badlands, traditional farmland, and small rural settlements alternate to form a landscape mosaic of high natural value. This habitat diversity supports a rich faunal community, including raptors, forest species, and numerous birds associated with traditional agricultural ecosystems. The low level of urbanisation and high environmental integrity make this one of the most authentic and least anthropised areas of the southern Apennines.

Velia Archaeological Area: The remains of the ancient Greek polis are set within a landscape dominated by Mediterranean scrub, olive groves, and coastal environments, creating a scenic mosaic of outstanding historical and natural value. Overlooking the Cilento coastline, the Velia area also hosts numerous species typical of open Mediterranean habitats, making it of significant interest not only from an archaeological perspective but also from a naturalistic one.

Day 1: Meeting in Naples and departure towards the province of Salerno. Stop in Cetara and continuation towards the WWF Oasi of Serre-Persano. Birdwatching activities and packed lunch. In the afternoon, transfer to the inner Cilento area and arrival in Corleto Monforte. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Breakfast. Departure towards the Casone d’Aresta beech forest. Birdwatching activities and packed lunch. In the afternoon, transfer to Montesano sulla Marcellana with nature stops along the route. Arrival at accommodation and birdwatching activities in the surrounding area. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Breakfast. Birdwatching activities in the areas of Magorno, Cessuta and Monte Farno. Packed lunch. In the afternoon, transfer towards the Gulf of Policastro with a stop at the Bussento River mouth. Arrival in Sapri, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Breakfast. Birdwatching activities on Monte Bulgheria. Packed lunch. Visit to the archaeological site of Velia. Return to Naples and end of the tour.

The rates refer to the standard packages developed within the project and are calculated for groups of 4 or 6 participants. The difference between Experience and Young versions is determined by the type of accommodation included and the services provided within each package.
It is possible to request a customised quotation for groups with a different number of participants (lower or higher than those included in the standard packages), as well as for tailor-made itineraries, which can be adjusted both in duration and geographical extension according to the specific needs of the group.
