Guided birdwatching experiences across the Venice Lagoon, Po Delta and Veneto region

The Venice area is one of the most rewarding birding destinations in Italy, thanks to its exceptional variety of wetlands, coastal habitats and inland natural areas. Located along major migratory flyways and shaped by centuries of interaction between nature and human activity, the Venice Lagoon, the Po Delta and the wider Veneto region host an outstanding diversity of birdlife throughout the year.

More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the region, including breeding, wintering and migratory birds. From large colonies of herons, spoonbills and flamingos in the lagoon and delta, to raptors, passerines and waterfowl in freshwater wetlands, farmland mosaics and river systems, every season offers excellent birding opportunities and the chance to observe both iconic and highly localized species.

Spring and autumn migrations are particularly rich, while winter brings impressive concentrations of waterbirds and raptors. Even the city of Venice itself offers surprising urban birding experiences, which extend beyond the historic center to the surrounding lagoon islands, including Murano, Burano and Torcello. Here, birds coexist with iconic architecture, canals and traditional landscapes, providing a truly unique birding experience.

Join a local professional ornithologist for a private birding day trip from Venice, available as both half-day and full-day trips, carefully tailored to seasonal highlights, weather conditions and your personal target species!

Here are some of our birding day trip options, designed for birdwatchers, wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts. If you have specific target species or habitats in mind, just let us know!

Explore Italy’s largest wetland on a full-day birding trip. Travel by car with multiple stops across marshes, lagoons, rivers, riparian forests and rural landscapes, home to a staggering number of waterbirds, raptors and passerines. The tour can start from Mestre or Chioggia (both easily reachable by train from Venice), where urban and peri-urban species can already be observed. Seasonal changes bring different highlights: migratory species in spring and autumn, and impressive wintering waterbird concentrations. With so many birds in such diverse habitats, every trip promises exciting sightings of iconic species.

Explore the Veneto Inland Wetlands on a half-day birding trip focused on the “Oasi di Casale”, a protected site that condenses the diverse habitats of the Venetian plain in a compact area. In just a two-hour walk, we’ll explore reedbeds, lakes, ponds, wet meadows, willow and poplar woods, oak-hornbeam forests, and even rare flooded woods and humid grasslands, each hosting its characteristic bird species. With so many habitats side by side, the area offers a remarkable abundance of birds, providing excellent opportunities to spot both common and rare species throughout the year.

The meeting point is in Vicenza, easily reachable by direct train from Venezia Santa Lucia station in approximately 45–60 minutes, arriving at Vicenza station, just a short distance from the tour starting area.

Discover San Giuliano Park, a vast peri-urban park on the outskirts of Venice, on a half-day birding trip. This green oasis offers a unique mix of lakes, canals, reedbeds, wooded areas, and open lawns, attracting a surprising variety of birds even within the city. Seasonal highlights include migratory species in spring and autumn, sedentary birds, and large wintering flocks of ducks and other waterbirds. Just a short trip from Venice, you can spot a huge variety of birds — including flamingos! Perfect for birders eager to combine urban birdwatching with a taste of Venetian landscapes, this park provides excellent opportunities to spot both common and more elusive species in a serene, easily accessible setting.
