The organization of birdwatching tours in Campania represents a project idea developed within the framework of the F.U.N.T. grant — Finanziamento Unione Nazionale Turismo (National Tourism Union Funding) — aimed at enhancing the natural heritage and promoting sustainable forms of tourism across the territory
The province of Caserta offers an extraordinary diversity of habitats, ranging from coastal wetlands and river mouths to rolling rural landscapes, agricultural plains, and the high mountain environments of the Matese range. Thanks to this ecological variety, the area represents one of the most important birdwatching destinations in Southern Italy throughout the year, particularly for waterbirds, migratory species, and birds of prey.
Birdwatching experiences in the province may include the wetlands of the Domitian coast, the Volturno and Garigliano river systems, inland lakes, Mediterranean dune habitats, and extensive rural and agricultural landscapes that shape much of the interior territory. Seasonal dynamics strongly influence bird diversity throughout the year. Winter brings large concentrations of ducks and waders across wetlands, river mouths, and coastal lagoons, including species such as Greater Flamingo, Eurasian Spoonbill, Black-winged Stilt, and Pied Avocet. Migration periods are particularly dynamic, with significant movements involving a wide range of species and large numbers of individuals crossing the region and using its wetlands, rivers, and open landscapes as key stopover areas.
During the summer months, wetlands and rural environments support a rich breeding community, with species such as Ferruginous Duck, Red-crested Pochard, Kentish Plover, European Roller, and Collared Pratincole.
A central highlight of any birdwatching experience in Caserta is the Domitian coast and its wetlands, widely regarded as one of the most important birding areas in Southern Italy for migratory and wintering birds. Sites such as Soglitelle and the Volturno river mouth host remarkable concentrations of waterbirds throughout the year. While this coastal system has experienced long-term environmental pressures, ongoing restoration and conservation efforts are contributing to a gradual ecological recovery, enhancing its value as a dynamic and highly productive birding area.
Inland, the Matese National Park provides a completely different ecological setting, with high-altitude lakes, extensive beech forests, and mountain grasslands supporting a rich diversity of forest and upland species. The mosaic of habitats creates excellent conditions for raptors, woodland birds, and open-country species across different elevations. Its mountain lakes in particular host significant concentrations of ducks and other wintering waterbirds, making the area a key seasonal refuge for these species in the region.
The province’s rural landscapes, together with wetlands, rivers, and hill ecosystems, create a remarkably diverse mosaic that supports high biodiversity across all seasons, making Caserta one of the most dynamic birdwatching destinations in Southern Italy.
- Caserta coastal wetlands: Despite the profound transformations it has undergone over recent decades, the Domitian Coast remains one of the most important wetland systems along Italy’s Tyrrhenian shoreline. Coastal lakes, canals, agricultural landscapes, and remnant dune habitats provide refuge for a rich community of waterbirds and migratory species throughout the year. Key birding hotspots include the LIPU Oasis of Soglitelle, an important site for the conservation of wetland birds, as well as the Volturno River Mouth and the Regi Lagni estuary, all strategically located along one of the main migration routes of the western Mediterranean. Thanks to its habitat diversity and high ecological value, the Domitian Coast ranks among the most rewarding birdwatching destinations in southern Italy.
- Matese National Park: Italy’s newest national park, the Matese National Park protects an extensive network of mountain habitats including beech forests, karst plateaus, upland grasslands, and high-altitude lakes along the border between Campania and Molise. This remarkable environmental diversity supports a rich bird community, ranging from woodland species to birds associated with open mountain landscapes, including many breeding species that find ideal nesting conditions in these habitats. During migration periods and throughout the winter months, the park’s lakes become important refuges for a variety of waterbirds. The Matese also offers some of the most spectacular and unspoiled landscapes in the southern Apennines.
- Royal Palace of Caserta: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Campania’s most iconic landmarks, the Royal Palace of Caserta represents a unique blend of history, culture, and nature. Beyond its magnificent architecture, the vast royal park encompasses woodlands, ornamental lakes, waterways, and extensive green spaces that provide habitat for a variety of bird species and other wildlife. A visit to the palace offers the opportunity to combine birdwatching and nature exploration with one of Italy’s most celebrated cultural attractions.

Day 1: Meeting in Naples and departure towards the province of Caserta. Stop at the Royal Palace of Caserta with a visit to the monumental complex and birdwatching activities in the historic park. Continue towards the Matese National Park and arrival at the accommodation. Nature activities in the surrounding area. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Breakfast. Departure towards the Matese National Park. Full day dedicated to nature exploration and birdwatching. Packed lunch. In the afternoon, transfer to the Domitian Coast with a stop at the Garigliano River mouth. Arrival at the accommodation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Breakfast. Birdwatching in the Domitian Coast area. Packed lunch. In the afternoon, return to the accommodation and enogastronomic experience with local products. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Breakfast. Birdwatching at Lake Patria and along the Domitian Coast. Packed lunch. Return to Naples and end of the tour.

The rates refer to the standard packages developed within the project and are calculated for groups of 4 or 6 participants. The difference between Experience and Young versions depends on the type of accommodation included and the services provided within each package.
A customised quotation can be requested for groups with a different number of participants (lower or higher than those included in the standard packages), as well as for tailor-made itineraries, which can be adjusted in terms of duration and geographical extension according to the specific needs of the group.
